Our innovative teaching method

Affective Humanistic Approach and Communicative Method

The experience gained in the past decade draw our attention to the need of a new teaching method that would allow the student to use the language in a short time and to speak without the typical emotional barrier that usually springs at the beginning of a new language acquisition process.

As a consequence we started to investigate new approaches and decided to get the certifications designed for language teachers – such as the CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, Cambridge ESOL) and CEDILS (Certificate in Didactic of the Italian Language to Foreigners, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice). During this training we came across the most advanced and recent teaching methods applied on an international scale which gave us a new perspective on the whole teaching experience. Afterwards we felt the need to create our own language school through which we could do what we love while making the life of language students a little better.

Our method is Communicative and it is based on an Affective Humanistic Approach. Of course, Communication is the first aim of the language learning, so the language is always presented in a realistic or authentic context and the process of learning is based on functions (such as introduce oneself, order in a restaurant, ask or give directions, etc.), but there are also important factors that could make communication and learning easier and more efficient.

The term Humanistic refers to the fact that the method follows the natural human way to process information, which starts from the right hemisphere (the creative, global and emotional part of our brain) to move gradually towards the left one (the analytic and more rational part of our brain). Teaching techniques that are designed to follow this path have proved to be far more efficient because they activate the long-term memory.

The term Affective is strongly related to psychology and means that this method takes in great consideration the personality of the student. Learning is an activity that involves the whole human being, not only our brain, so teaching techniques must consider that each person has a different way of learning, a different way of feeling and to relating with other people. Using an affective method means making learners as comfortable as possible, creating a relaxing and joyful environment in which they can feel safe to explore their learning abilities and start communicating in the new language right away.
